Leading With Purpose, Growing with People

Thoughts from Sarah Murrow, President & CEO of Allianz Trade in Americas

Every leader makes decisions that define not only strategy, but culture. For me, those decisions always start with purpose.

One of the most important choices I’ve made as a leader is to prioritize growth with purpose. Why? Because growth isn’t sustainable if it only serves the short term. When we focus on impact for our people, our customers, and our communities, we build resilience that lasts.

Growth with purpose is not about sacrificing results; it’s about multiplying them. Purpose grounds us when market conditions are volatile, and it pushes us to think beyond quarterly targets. When leaders anchor their decisions in a bigger “why,” they create an environment where teams can move with confidence, even in uncertainty.

That idea has proven true time and again in my own experience. During my time leading teams in the UK, we developed an effective approach to winning strategic business opportunities by forming cross-functional deal teams. These teams brought together Distribution, Credit, and subject matter experts selected specifically to address prospect needs.

In one notable case, we integrated our collections team when we identified this as a priority for the prospect. The collaborative approach—bringing together diverse expertise aligned with customer requirements—led to a successful outcome: winning the business and delivering meaningful value to the customer.

Purpose is more than words on a wall. It shows up in the everyday choices leaders make and the culture they create. In my own leadership journey, I’ve found three ways purpose makes the difference:

  • Resilience that lasts: Purpose gives teams clarity. When challenges arise, they don’t lose focus, because they know why their work matters.
  • Value for people, customers, and communities: Purpose-driven organizations think about the ripple effect of decisions, ensuring that value is created at every level
  • Alignment for long-term impact: Purpose keeps strategy from being reactive. It allows businesses to invest in the future with intention.

At Allianz Trade, our focus on purpose drives how we show up for our customers, partners, and employees every day. We help businesses grow responsibly while protecting what matters most.

Purpose, however, can’t stand alone. It becomes real through people.

Since joining the Americas Region this past July, I’ve been listening, learning, and drawing inspiration from the teams that power our success. One of the clearest lessons so far is this: growth is only possible when we show up together.

Leadership isn’t about having all the answers, it’s about listening first. The creativity, commitment, and collaboration of our people are what make growth possible. When leaders take time to truly hear their teams, what challenges they face, what motivates them, what ideas they bring to the table, they unlock potential that no strategy document can deliver alone.

Every new chapter brings fresh lessons, and my first months as President & CEO for the Americas have reinforced some timeless ones:

  • Be curious and listen first: Leaders earn trust by asking good questions and being open to perspectives, not by having every solution ready.
  • Celebrate creativity and commitment: People want to know their contributions matter. Recognizing ideas and effort strengthens a culture of innovation.
  • Show up together: Growth isn’t a solo endeavor. It takes collaborative effort, shared accountability, and a willingness to support one another.

Those lessons have come to life in my first 90 days, where I’ve been deeply impressed by the region’s resourcefulness and problem-solving spirit. This 125-year-old business has cultivated a remarkable culture of finding creative solutions, particularly when addressing customer needs. I’ve witnessed numerous examples of teams listening carefully to customer challenges and then collaborating to develop innovative approaches. This commitment—understanding customer requirements first, then applying our collective creativity—exemplifies the gumption that has defined the Americas region throughout its history. It’s a reminder that leadership is as much about learning as it is about guiding.

When leaders ground decisions in purpose and lean into the strength of their teams, they create conditions for confident growth. That’s how businesses build resilience, deliver value, and set themselves apart in the market.

At Allianz Trade, we know that protecting what matters most isn’t only about balance sheets, it’s about the people and partnerships behind them. Our teams are the heart of every success story, and our purpose ensures those stories are sustainable for the long term.

Growth with purpose is not a trade-off, it’s a multiplier. And growth with people is not optional, it’s the only way forward.

As leaders, our role is to connect the two: to anchor strategy in purpose, and to listen, learn, and show up together with our teams. When we do that, we don’t just meet goals, we create a culture where growth is confident, resilient, and shared.
