Trade relations between the U.S. and Canada have taken an abrupt turn. The countries had been involved in extensive negotiations to revise the US – Mexico – Canada (USMCA) trade agreement and it appeared that the two sides had reached a substantive accord, but then talks collapsed. Predictably, both sides were quick to blame each other. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said, “Canada declined to finalize the trade deal under the terms agreed earlier this week. They simply… wanted more” while Canadian Prime Minister Marc Carney said, “last minute changes in the U.S. proposed terms were unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal.”
