Non-government labor data shows decline

Dan North | October 2025

With the Labor Department and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) temporarily shut down, there is little insight into the labor market at the moment. The most important release, the BLS’s employment report, was not published for September. That report contains a wealth of data, including the number of jobs created (also known as non-farm payrolls, or NFP) the unemployment rate, and many other measures, all sliced and diced by industry, region, age, sex, education, etc. The BLS also publishes the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS), which shows the inner dynamics of the labor market, including job openings, hirings, quits, and layoffs. In addition, the Labor Department produces the weekly jobless claims report, which is a hard count of the number of people filing for unemployment benefits.
